September 21st - 25th

Here's a peek at our week....

Preschool
The theme for this week in the preschool room  is "Barnyard Animals". Students began making their own little barnyard animals using paint today! What do you think these will be when finished?

Kindergarten
Students completed their Mondrian Inspired pieces this week! We used squares and rectangles as well as vertical and horizontal lines. Ask the students to see if they remember all the shapes and lines, I have a good feeling they will! We finished the piece with painted lines, so for this project we explored: tracing, name writing, cutting along a line, using the glue bottles correctly, and using paint.

^^ what lovely lines and motor skills

1st grade
Students completed their Mondrian Inspired pieces this week. The process was very similar to the process used in kindergarten, which makes this project a great review at the start of the year.

2nd grade

We were able to put most of the pieces of our project together this week! There was a lot of listening and gluing. Some people got a little "glue crazy", we will have to remember to use little dots of glue in the future. Students are excited to see their projects coming together and so close to completion.

3rd grade

Students worked on adding line work and cutting out more of the pieces for their projects. We are making progress!

4th grade

We spent about half the class discussing and planning the drawing contest we are entering! Your child should have brought home information and a permission slip for the contest, the theme is "My Favorite Place in America". After the discussion students worked on adding more lines to their colorful landscapes.

5th grade

The sharpie line work on the landscapes is coming along nicely!

6th grade
Students are adding the zentangle designs to their letter project and I am feeling impressed with their ideas and careful work!

7th grade
We took a break from the drawings to begin the Saint Sculpture project. We looked at images of actual sculptures and statutes of Saints to notice the way artists show fabric, hair and other important details. Students then begin the dry newspaper portion of the project. There are a lot of good ideas in the works!!

8th grade

Students began their animal zentangle drawings this week. The first step is to choose a pitot of an animal and draw the outline of that animal. The second step is to use zentangles to show the shadows, highlights and features of the animal.

September 14 - 17th

Here is a little peek at our week....

Preschool
This week's theme was "All About Me". I used painter's tape to write the letter of each student's first name and then had them paint all over the paper. When I paint dries I'll peel the tape off.
^^finished piece with the tape off

Kindergarten
Students continued work on their Mondrian inspired piece. Today was all about scissors and glue! Building those motor skills!

1st grade
Students continued work on their Mondrian piece. We were busy with the scissors and keeping our pieces organized.

2nd Grade
Students worked on many different parts of their Klee inspired pieces. We used rulers, pencils and scissors today. We talked about different lines.

3rd Grade
Our listening skills were tested as we began setting up our line landscape. Students needed to follow directions and orient their papers in specific ways so that later stages of the project are successful.

4th Grade
We completed practice worksheets and got started on the artwork this week. Students set up a landscape in pencil and began adding line work in marker. These will be so colorful when completed!

5th Grade
Students utilized their fine motor skills on the worksheet to prepare themselves for the black and white line landscape. After practicing, students moved on to the final paper and set up the landscape in pencil. Sharpie next!

6th Grade
After completing the practice and collecting their ideas, students used rulers to make two 1 inch borders on their papers. Then they chose to use an initial or all of their initials and were asked to write them in an interesting way. Lines and patterns come next.

7th Grade
Students have a choice to do a line landscape or a negative space zentangle. Hopefully they are able to explain both of those projects to you because we discussed them at length and looked at many examples.

^^ Landscape source material

8th Grade
This group had their first art class of the year this week so we needed to review procedures and expectations. After that we looked at some artwork and talked over ideas for the first project.

Student Progress September 8th - 10th

Our students were hard at work this week beginning their first projects of the year. Eighth grade did not have class this week because we were off on Monday so you'll have to wait until next week to see what they are working on.

Preschool
This week was the first time I met our new 5 day preschool students. I like to begin the year with a self portrait, this project allows me to get a sense of what interests them and their current motor skills and drawing developmental level. It's so exciting to see how they progress through the year.

Kindergarten
We began by looking at the work of Piet Mondrian. Students learned the definition of: horizontal and vertical lines and used those words along with identifying shapes and colors. Students also were able to articulate the similarities and differences between a selection of Mondrian paintings. I was so impressed, especially for the second week of school. Our hands on activity involved primary colors, tracing shapes and writing your name 6 different times. This may sound easy but the little hands for very tired.

"Arting"

An image filled post of what we were creating this week in the art room is coming soon.

While you wait, please enjoy this wonder quip from preschool art.

"When we're done arting do you want to play?"

I think arting is my new favorite word.

First week review August 31 - September 3rd

The first week of classes went well! It was great to see faces from last year and to meet so many new Holy Family students in all grades! The first week of classes is a time to learn new names, review expectations, delegate classroom "jobs", and prepare so items for the year. That being said, this post won't have photos of what each grade is working on. Future updates will show images of what each grade is currently working on.

I hope everyone has a fun and restful long weekend and returns Tuesday ready to create!!

Here's a preview of the September front window mural. Look for it to appear in the large window to the right of the front door of Holy Family School.
