Holy Family Oil Pastel Resist -- 8th Grade

8th grade students prepared for the Christmas Celebration by creating an oil pastel resist of the Holy Family. First students drew their scene using pencil, they were instructed to include Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the North Star and they had some artistic freedom to design everything else. Next, students used oil pastel to add color. They colored with bold, streaky strokes so some of the white paper showed through. To finishe the piece students watercolor painted with black over the entire drawing. The black paint stuck anywhere there was white paper showing but the oil pastel resisted the paint, leaving those hold oil pastel colors. The oil pastel and watercolor combination created a rustic look.
